Today we are delighted to offer for sale a rare complete 1930s Depression-era Girl Scout Uniform, including yellow kerchief, pocket knife, belt, beret and handbook!
This official cotton uniform is from the early 1930s, as evidenced by its grey-green color (prior to 1930, Girl Scout uniforms were khaki-colored) and snap-front modesty panel (this 5-1/2" x 2-1/4" panel was replaced with a zipper in 1935). 29 patches and merit bades adorn the front of the uniform and the sleeves, including a chevron patch that indicates that this uniform belonged to an assistant troop leader. The book and the belt are marked with the name "Elma MacMurray." The four-blade bone-handle pocketknife is marked "Stipe" on a black and white plastic label. The golden yellow kerchief includes the Girl Scout insignia on the back and a gold metal official Girl Scout pin on the front. The green-webbed belt comes with its metal buckle that bears the Girl Scout/eagle insignia and raised letters that read "Girl Scouts Be Prepared." This well-cared-for dress was no doubt something that the young Elma MacMurray took pride in wearing, as it is meticulously cared for with very minimal signs of age. Her rank of assistant troop leader shows her loyalty and commitment to the Girl Scouts. The Girl Scout Handbook (originally published in 1920 and revised in 1929, per the copyright page) is clearly well-read, with a taped-up spine and loose binding and pages. Inside you will find all you need to know about being a Girl Scout, from how her uniform must look to how to care for the home and campsite. It's truly a time capsule for the Girl Scout way of life in the 1930s!
This uniform presents in very good pre-worn antique condition, with minor fraying and discoloration around the neckline and shoulders. A few loose seams and pinholes are present. Belt has minor patina commensurate with age and pocket knife has age-related rust on the blades. Kerchief has little to no discoloration and some minor loose edges. Book is in fair condition, with taped spine and loose binding and pages. Dress is in good antique condition, with wear and patina commensurate with age. All aspects of the uniform are sold as-found - please review all photos and ask any questions before purchasing. This rare complete example of a 1930s Girl Scout uniform will make a fantastic addition to any antique/vintage clothing and textile collection...Fresh to the market!

Knife: 3-1/4" long; 1/2" tall (case)
Hat: 7-1/2" tall; 10" width (widest point)
Kerchief: Appx. 46" from tie to tie; 17-1/2" from middle point to tip.
Handbook: 7-1/4" tall; 5-1/4" wide
