    Description

    Wuyak-kuitai
is the guard or sometimes the ogre that is used to prevent transgressions on the path of the kachinas. Sometimes he is called the Angry Kachina, used to enforce community work. He had many forms that have changed through time, and as the black ogre was used to prevent children from bad behavior.
Whatever his purpose, this black ogre is beautifully hand made by Arizona Hopi artist, Buri Foster. The kachina stands 26 1/2" tall and the body is carved from one piece of cottonwood tree. The feathers are each carved separately and inserted into the head. The base is an additional piece. As you can see from the photos, only one foot is attached, leaving the other stepping up for the dance.
Kachinas of this size are unusual and this is an outstanding example of traditional Hopi work, using fur, reeds, yarn and leather.
From a smoke free environment. Thanks for looking!
