Proudly presented today is this spectacular Hopi Kachina doll, depicting a bust of Anghak'china, the Longhair Kachina beautifully carved by Philbert Polyestewa, a highly respected carver from Moencopi. Counting the macaw feather, this wonderful piece stands 12 and a half inches tall. We had discussed this project somewhat at length, and at first the sculpture was to be just the head. But after talking to an uncle, Philbert was concerned that such a piece would too closely resemble the Kuito, or Friend. By adding the shoulders, this changed the entire approach, and relieved his misgivings. i agree with his reasoning entirely. This also allowed him to fully show the long beard, and the feather array in back, complete with the dangling counterweight (which is usually left off by carvers). The result is a startling piece that will command attention in any Kachina doll collection.
