Proudly presented today is this beautiful Hopi Kachina doll, depicting Wupamo, a threatening guard, regarded as one of the Furious Kachinas. This Kachina, a guardian of the Powamu, will make sudden, unpredictable lunges at the audience, the dancers and of course the Clowns, much in the manner of a vicious dog. In times past, this figure would be an enforcer at community projects. Standing 8 and a half inches tall (not counting his feathers), it is carved by the very well-known and highly respected Lloyd Talawyma, a gifted carver who has won many awards throughout the Southwest. His work is represented in the Heard Museum gift shop, the House of Shalakos in Albuquerque, Packard’s in Santa Fe, and the exquisite website, Ancient Nations.
