Proudly presented today is this exquisite Hopi Kachina doll, depicting Yowe, the legendary Priest Killer. An  Ogre Kachina, he may be regarded as a deity of certain Hopi Warrior Clans, having a supremely powerful inner spiritual responsibility to issue punishment, including the taking of life. He is called the Priest Killer because he killed and beheaded the Catholic Priest in charge of the mission at Awatovi, when that Hopi town was destroyed, in 1700. Standing a mere 5 inches tall, this extraordinary example was carved by Mihpi Chapella, of First Mesa, a carver with over 3 decades of experience. This piece was carved in 1996, and displays an amazing attention to detail. Following the legend, the figure wears a single earring, that Yowe took from his estranged wife, who was living with the priest. Truly an amazing piece.
