NATIVE AMERICANHEMIS MANA KACHINA BY JEROME NEQUATEWA
Half Hopi, half Zuni Jerome Nequatewa was raised with the knowledge of the culture and customs of both the Hopi and the Zuni. Jerome was taught to carve by his father, the late Harold Nequatewa. Jerome’s kachinas are delicately carved, showing attention to movement and detail.
No other kachinas, neither clowns nor side dancers, appear with the line of the Hemis Kachinas, except the Hemis Manas. The Manas are often the town elders who create the beat of the dance with rasping sticks, drums, and gourds. They make frog-like sounds that are intended to resemble thunder in the distance. The appearance of the Hemis Mana is generally a prayer for corn (life).
Jerome yields to the natural shape of cottonwood root in order to create this wonderfully carved Sun Face Kachina. This marvelous carving would be a great addition to your kachina or Native American art collection. Signed
