Offering avery rare 1930's-40's Amperite Model 60
Velocity
Ribbon Microphone
. (It's the biggest of all the Amperite models.) I have seen a few Model SR80's, but this is the only Model 60 I have ever seem come up for sale. At the time, these were some of the finest velocity ribbons on the market, a brute of a microphone (over 4 pounds) with a hefty solid bronze and steel casing.
The Amperite company was founded in New York in 1922 and started out producing components for tube-operated radio sets, and controlling devices. But b
y
the end of the 30's they also developed a line of microphones advertised as 'Studio microphones at P.A. prices'. And
, si
nce Amperite was a heavy-hitter in New York, they became popular in many of the clubs, ballrooms, and studios in the Big Apple's "Big Band" scene, and became
favorites to
many vocalists in New York in the late 30's
and the 40's, like Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra.
This Model 60 has been thoroughly cleaned, with
some
physical restoration.
It sounds amazing from it's original ribbon motor producing
rich ribbon-quality fidelity and good output
.
(
Please note:
It is recommended that you use a pre-amp as vintage ribbons mics generally have lower output.
)
The bronze casing still has some light patina but overall very presentable with that cool early machine-age vibe. It's mounted on the original brass yoke assembly with thumb-screw which holds the pivot angle firmly in place, plus the intact stamped brass Amperite maker's badge. The mic stand adapter was missing so a new one has been reproduced, so this mic can be threaded onto any standard desk stand, floor stand, or overhead boom.
The desk stand shown
is included
, and comes wired to a
new 5 foot cable with male XLR plug
.
