Vintage Hemis Kachina ~ Katsina Artist Signed Loretta Multine
Kachina is overall size approx 14 1/2" tall with a 3 1/2" dia base.
Kachina is constructed of painted carved wood yarn and some feathers .

good pre-owned vintage condition. There is a feather missing from top of right hand and a pick from top of head dress (tablate) is missing. Dust from age and storage.  See pictures-- sold "as is"
Loretta Multine is half Hopi Tobacco Clan and half Navajo Tachinii, "Red Strike in Water" and born for the Honeycomb Clan. She learned kachina carving in 1983 from her husband, who learned the craft from his grandfather. Loretta has been carving kachinas for over 40 years.
She uses the root of the cottonwood tree for her creations.
The Hemis kachina is
a Hopi doll traditionally thought to represent prayers for crop fertility
.
The Hemis kachina is often featured in ceremonies at Hopi villages, such as the Home Dance or Niman Ceremony.
It is known for its elaborate headdress, called a tablate, which can be half the size of its body.
The tablate is painted with phallic and cloud symbols and capped with feathers.
