    Description

Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome
    .
You are looking at a unique and rare early Astatic model D-104 crystal microphone from the 1940's (possibly 1930's) that comes with a nice Snyder cast iron desk stand.
You'll notice right away that while this looks like the newer D-104's of the past 60 years this one has a few differences that are quite obvious. This model was intended to either be mounted to a desk stand from the bottom or it could be used in a ring with springs. This mic had two options and still has the four original hooks that screw into the side of the mic.
It also has more screws in the rear of the mic that hold the inner components together. Astatic eventually changed that design giving the newer D-104 just 8 screws instead of this models 11. You don't see too many of these early D-104's around.
The D-104 was manufactured by Astatic in Youngstown, Ohio and was to be used as a public address mic as it's non-directional. It was a very popular design for this company and they continued to make the single element D-104 model for many decades retaining the same overall style. This D-104 has the early riveted badge and is actually much thicker than the regular D-104. This D-104 also has the shorter built in early chrome lower mechanism where the later models had the F-11 adapter.
The mic still has the original element and while it looks perfect the wiring will need to be redone so I don't know if the element actually works? I would recommend using this strictly as a display model due to the unknown working condition.
The cable on this mic actually runs through the bottom of the mics head. That cable was cut years ago.
The polished chrome body is free of any deep scratches, corrosion or dents. Very lite scratches and scuffs only. I would rate the cosmetic condition a conservative 8 out of 1 - 10 and the Astatic badge is very nice and legible as well.
The Snyder DM-1 model desk stand is almost period to this mic. Just a few years newer but makes a great platform. It's in very good overall condition with typical lite wear in the form of lite paint chips on top of the cast iron base. It has a classic deco 3 tier "waterfall" design. There is a 6 inch chrome riser with an AD-8 chrome adapter to seat the mic. With the mic on top it's appx 10 1/2 inches tall X 4 1/2 inches wide.
    The DM-1
has 3 new felt pads on the bottom of the base and they work excellent to keep this stand from scratching any surface it may rest on.
A very nice piece that will draw attention anywhere it's shown. If you demand a D-104 that few others have then this is your girl.
