    Description

Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome
    .
You are looking at a very rare and unique variant of the American D9T dual dynamic microphone made in Los Angeles, California during the mid to late 1940's. This is the Elgin model D9A and it comes with a period 1940's Atlas DS-6 model desk stand and short cable.
It should be noted right away that while this mic does still work the output is very low and cannot be used for recording or live purposes. It should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only. Still a very rare and very nice addition to any vintage mic collection.
To my knowledge Elgin was the only other manufacturer that sold this mic under license and it's the only example I have ever come across. Again, these are very rare.
This "ribbon style" microphone is actually a dual dynamic design that sits on it's original yoke and resembled the high end RCA mics of that era. The D9A has a look all it's own replicating the Skyscrapers of the day that were being built all across America. The heavy deco influence can be seen with it rounded, smooth edges that are appealing to the eye at any angle.
The American D9 series was first introduced in the late 1930's and had a run of about 15 to 20 years total. This model of mic originally came with nothing more than a decal but around the mid 1940's they were given a metal badge.
The inner black silk pop filter that covers the dual element inside looks fantastic as does the dual elements. The D9 mics were true cardioid mics having the two elements for a good sound but again this one barely works.
The satin chrome finish on this mic shows typical lite wear but is certainly way above average compared to most D9A or D9AT mics I have personally seen and both thumb screws are present and work excellent giving you the ability to fix the desired angle of the mic. Many of these D9 series mics are often missing at least one thumb screw or the entire yolk. The Elgin D9A still has a very nice luster. The finish has been cleaned inside and out as well as on the yoke which rotates perfectly giving the mic a wide degree of tilt. Yoke is just as nice as the mic and will screw onto any desk or floor stand though a stand is provided.
Bent and broken ribs are a common problem on these but there are absolutely no broken or fractured ribs on this old girl and it's probably the nicest I have seen in a while. All original screws and hardware are included.
Again, this mic comes with a cable. It's appx 22 inches in length. It's soft, pliable and free of damage. It functions perfectly as well in case you ever want to fix the elements. It comes with period female and male XLR end connectors. You'll notice it enters into the base of the stand and exits out the bottom cable port.
The mic with stand is appx 15 inches high X 6 inches wide.
I would rate the overall physical condition of this mic a 7 on  a scale of 1 - 10.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...
The stand is a quality Atlas DS-6 model with the brass base and polished chrome finish. As you can see the stand really compliments the mic and shows about as much wear.
It makes for an extremely stable platform and has a very old toggle switch that is no longer wired to the mic but could be at some future time if needed. There is typical chrome loss with lite scratches but again...looks very good considering it's 80 years old. The 6 inch chrome riser shows heavier scratches but overall very good and the 3 original felt pads are in excellent shape keeping the stand from scratching any surface it sits on.
This would make a great display piece in the home, office or studio and sure to draw attention wherever it sits.
